Thai Agricultural
Sarun Khumto; Benjawan Rerkasem; Sansanee Jamjod.
Cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) is self-pollinating, with flowering traits that exclude crosspollination. Hybrid rice seed production is therefore limited by low outcrossing rate between parental lines. To improve outcrossing ability in cultivated rice, common wild rice (O. rufipogon Griff.) was used as a source for outcrossing traits and backcrossed to Suphanburi 1 (SPR1) cultivated rice (BC2). In this study, F5 progenies of the backcross (BC2F5) were grown and evaluated for flowering traits in comparison with SPR1 parent. At flowering, florets were collected to measure the length of anthers and pistil. The anthers of SPR1 averaged 2.32 mm and pistil 1.50 mm, in length. The F5 population ranged 2.40 to 3.93 mm in anther length (3% to 170% of SPR1) and...

Rice plants with more roots are better at acquiring water and nutrients from the soil. But to study rice root system in the soil is time consuming and labour intensive, making screening for root traits in breeding programs difficult. The objective of this study was to compare root growth of two rice varieties with different rooting habits, Bue Bang and KDML105, in 8 rooting media, in order to develop a simple and rapid means for screening. The rooting media were T1, Sansai soil; T2, black loam soil; T3, 1:1 mixture (by weight) of black loam soil and fine sand; T4, 2:1 mixture of black loam soil and fine sand; T5, 1:1 mixture of black loam soil and coarse sand; T6, 2:1 mixture of black loam soil and coarse sand; T7, complete nutrient solution and T8,...

Colored rice or pigmented rice refers to the color of rice kernel such as black, purple and red which is form by deposits of anthocyanin in different layers of the pericarp, seedcoat and aluerone layers. This experiment was to evaluate nutritional values (anthocyanin, iron and zinc) of rice grain among local colored rice varieties. Variation among varieties for anthocyanin, iron and zinc concentrations were found in brown rice, white rice and bran. Significant amount of anthocyanin concentration was found in black color rice, whereas very low concentration was found in red and brown color rice. Among all black rice, the highest anthocyanin concentration was found in Niaw Dam 6 collected from Udon Thani (90 mg/100 g in brown rice) and (820 mg/100 g in...

Pathum Thani 1 (PTT1) grown in Northern Thailand is often rejected by buyers on the basis of it poor quality, while it is a popular variety among farmers and rice mills in the Central region. This study evaluated head rice yield and chalkiness in dry season of PTT1 from different regions of Thailand. Samples of dry season 2011 crop of PTT1 were collected from the Upper North, Lower North, Central, East, and Northeast. Sixty-seven paddy samples were dehulled and milled individually. The milled rice of each sample was separated into head and broken rice to determine percentage of head rice. Percentage of chalkiness was determined by weight of chalky grain, in both whole and broken grain. The Central region had the highest percentage of chalkiness (49.1%) and...

Weedy rice (Oryza sativa f. spontanea) is one of most serious weeds in direct-seeded rice production. High genetic diversity and adaptability of weedy rice made it very difficult to control in the rice field. This study aim to assess genetic diversity and population structure of weedy rice populations from Lower North, Northeast and Central of Thailand in wet of 2009 using twelve microsatellite markers. Genetic diversity and population structure of weedy rice were determined and compared with seven common wild rice populations and seven check varieties commonly grown in these regions. Weedy rice populations in this present study were hybrid between common wild rice and crop rice. The population structure of them was structured into 2 clusters according to...

Variation in zinc (Zn) concentration in the grain of 50 local rice varieties from Southern Thailand was examined by diphenyl thiocarbazone (DTZ) staining (intense, medium, low, and nil) and chemical analysis. Intense staining was found in the aleurone layer of 94% of the varieties, in the embryo 56% of the varieties and endosperm 12% of the varieties. Variation was found in the DTZ staining intensity of the embryo and endosperm of individual grains, with Shannon-weaver diversity index (H) of the DTZ staining at 0.15-1.00 for the embryo and 0.00-1.00 for the endosperm. Chemical analysis found the Zn concentration in brown rice grain ranging between 18-34 mg Zn/kg, 7 varieties were considered high grain Zn (29-34 mg Zn/kg). The Zn concentration in the husk...
